Where to Trek Gorillas in Uganda
Uganda is one of the best destinations in the world for mountain gorilla trekking, offering unforgettable wildlife encounters in breathtaking tropical forests. Home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, Uganda provides travelers with an opportunity to experience these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
The two main destinations for gorilla trekking in Uganda are:
- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is Uganda’s most popular gorilla trekking destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi is home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
The park features dense tropical rain forest, mist-covered hills, rich biodiversity, and over 20 habituated gorilla families available for trekking. Bwindi offers four main trekking sectors:
- Buhoma Sector
- Ruhija Sector
- Rushaga Sector
- Nkuringo Sector
Each sector provides unique trekking experiences, varying in terrain, scenery, and gorilla families.
Why Trek Gorillas in Bwindi?
- Highest number of gorilla families in Uganda
- Excellent trekking success rates
- Wide range of luxury, mid-range, and budget lodges

Trekking Experience
Gorilla trekking begins early in the morning with a briefing from park rangers. Visitors are grouped into small teams and guided through the forest in search of gorilla families. Trekking can take between 2 to 8 hours depending on the gorillas’ location.
Once found, visitors spend one magical hour observing the gorillas as they feed, play, groom, and interact in the wild.
2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, located in the Virunga Mountain ranges bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park offers a quieter and more exclusive gorilla trekking experience compared to Bwindi. Its dramatic volcanic scenery, bamboo forests, and cool mountain climate make it one of the most scenic gorilla destinations in Africa.
Why Choose Mgahinga?
- Less crowded trekking experience
- Spectacular volcanic mountain scenery
- Home to the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
- Opportunity to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking
- Easy access from Kigali, Rwanda
