Rwenzori Mountains National Park
The Mountains of the Moon. The snow-capped Rwenzoris rise on Uganda's western border to Margherita Peak, at 5,109 metres the third-highest summit in Africa. This is serious, beautiful trekking country.
Routes climb through forest, bamboo, heather and the strange giant lobelias and groundsels of the alpine zone to glaciers and lakes. Multi-day circuits use mountain huts with guides and porters, and summit climbs need some glacier experience.
Shorter walks in the foothills give a taste of the mountains for those who do not want a full expedition.
