Uganda Travel Information
Visas
- Apply online before you travel on the official portal, visas.immigration.go.ug. Watch out for copycat sites.
- A single-entry tourist visa is available; the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Check current fees on the official portal.
- You'll need a passport valid for at least 6 months with a blank page, a passport photo and your itinerary. We send you a booking itinerary to upload.
- Your approval letter is valid for 90 days from issue, so apply about a month before you travel. Print it and show it on arrival.
Health
- Malaria is present across Uganda. Talk to your doctor about antimalarials, and use repellent, long sleeves at dusk and nets.
- Discuss routine vaccines, hepatitis A and B and typhoid with your clinic.
- Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
- Drink bottled or filtered water.
Packing for a Uganda safari
Clothing: light neutral layers, a fleece for cool Bwindi mornings, a waterproof jacket, long trousers and sleeves, a sun hat.
For treks: broken-in waterproof boots, gardening gloves, gaiters, a rain-proof day pack.
Essentials: passport and printed e-visa, insurance details, medication, repellent, sunscreen, binoculars, camera and spare batteries, a UK-style (Type G) adapter, a reusable bottle.
Leave at home: plastic bags and camouflage or military-style clothing.
Best time to visit Uganda
- June–September and December–February (dry): easier trekking and the best game viewing in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Kidepo. Peak season, so book permits early.
- March–May and October–November (wetter): green landscapes, great birding, fewer visitors and lower gorilla permit fees in April, May and November.
For gorillas specifically, see the Gorilla Trekking Guide.
Money & practicalities
The currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). US dollars are widely accepted for tourist services; bring newer, undamaged notes. Tipping guides and porters is appreciated.
