Uganda Safari FAQs

Every question is a good one. Here are the ones we hear most. If yours isn't here, just ask.

Booking & packages

Are your safaris private or group tours?

Our trips are private and tailor-made by default. Start from one of our Uganda safari packages and we'll adjust it to suit you.

How much does a safari cost?

Every safari on this site shows a price per person in Budget, Midrange and Luxury styles, based on 2 people sharing. Your final quote depends on your dates, group size and lodges. Send an enquiry and we'll tailor it.

What's included?

Each package page lists what's included. Usually: a private 4x4 with driver-guide, accommodation, meals as listed, park fees, permits and the activities in the itinerary.

How do I pay, and is there a deposit?

To confirm your safari we ask for any gorilla or chimpanzee permits in full plus a 30% deposit on the rest of the trip cost. The balance is due 60 days before arrival; if you book within 60 days of arrival, the full amount is due at booking. You can pay by bank transfer in US dollars or by card (card payments carry a 3.5% fee). If you cancel 60 or more days before arrival you lose the deposit; 30–59 days before, 50% of the trip cost; under 30 days, 100%. Uganda Wildlife Authority permits are non-refundable but may be rescheduled under UWA rules. We strongly recommend travel insurance. See our Terms & Conditions for full details.

How far ahead should I book?

For gorilla trekking, 3 to 6 months ahead is ideal, and longer for June to September. UWA requires full payment for a permit when it's booked.

Gorillas & wildlife

How do gorilla permits work?

Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, are limited per family per day, and we book them for you. Details are in our Gorilla Trekking Guide.

Am I guaranteed to see gorillas?

No one can guarantee wildlife sightings. Habituated families are tracked every day and encounters are very likely, but be wary of anyone promising a sure thing.

Is there an age limit?

Gorilla trekking is for ages 15 and over; chimp tracking is usually 12 and over. Families with younger children can enjoy game drives, boat trips and nature walks.

Can I see gorillas and chimpanzees on the same trip?

Transport & logistics

Where does the safari start and end?

Most safaris start and end in Entebbe, close to Entebbe International Airport, or in Kampala. We can also start or finish at your hotel, or in Kigali for trips that include Rwanda.

Do you provide airport pickup and drop-off?

Yes. Airport pickup and drop-off at Entebbe International Airport are included on our safaris, and your driver-guide will meet you on arrival.

What vehicles do you use?

We use 4x4 Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for game viewing, built for Uganda's roads and park tracks.

Will I have a private driver-guide?

Yes. Every safari is private, with your own English-speaking driver-guide for the whole trip.

How long are the drives between national parks?

Drives usually take 4 to 9 hours, and the longest is Entebbe to Bwindi. We break up long days with scenic stops, and you can shorten them with a domestic flight.

Can you arrange domestic flights within Uganda?

Yes. We can book scheduled or charter flights to airstrips near Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Kidepo. See our fly-in safaris.

Can I join a safari if I am already in Uganda?

Yes. We can pick you up from your hotel or anywhere in Kampala or Entebbe, and short trips can be arranged at short notice, subject to permit availability.

Travel & health

Do I need a visa?

Most visitors do. Apply online on the official portal, visas.immigration.go.ug. See Travel Info.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine?

Since the 2 October 2026 immigration notice, a yellow fever certificate is no longer required for entry to Uganda. The vaccine is still recommended, and airlines or onward countries may ask for proof, so check with your travel clinic. See Health.

When is the best time to visit?

June to September and December to February are the driest months, but Uganda is good all year. See best time to visit.

Is Uganda safe for tourists?

Most visits are trouble-free. We plan routes with care, our guides are with you throughout, and we follow official advice. Check your own government's latest advisory before you travel.

Families & special travellers

Is Uganda suitable for family safaris?

Yes. Families enjoy game drives, boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel and the Nile, nature walks and community visits. We plan shorter drives, family-friendly lodges and a pace that suits children. See the age limits above for gorillas and chimps.

Do you organise honeymoon and romantic safaris?

Yes. We can build in private sundowners, special lodge rooms, bush dinners and slower days between treks. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll tailor it.

Are senior travellers welcome?

Absolutely. We match trekking sectors, lodges and driving times to your fitness, and porters can carry bags and help on the trails. Many treks can be gentler than people expect.

Can you organise safaris for large groups?

Yes. We organise group safaris for 20 to 30 people, with extra vehicles, guides and lodge space arranged around your group.

Do you cater for solo travellers?

Yes. Every trip is private, so you travel with your own driver-guide at your pace. Some lodges charge a single supplement, and we'll show this clearly in your quote.

Can you arrange safaris for travellers with mobility challenges?

Yes, with careful planning. We choose accessible lodges and gentler activities, and in Bwindi a sedan chair carried by local porters can be arranged for gorilla trekking. Tell us your needs and we'll plan around them.
